(Hopefully this one's not outlawed by the community rules. I'm not related to this sale in any way beyond being a fan. Just trying to spread the word.)

Aaron Acevedo is an artist for Deadlands, L5R, D&D, the WoD, Solomon Kane, and a bunch of other cool books. He's the CEO of Talisman games and an all around swell guy. A couple of days ago, his house was hit by flash floods, and at the very least the carpets and furniture were ruined. Hopefully his gaming books made it out ok. ;)

Anyway, he's holding a print sale to help pay for all the damage to his home. Prints are only $15.

Now, what do I want...
The princess watched as the two men fought within the circle of onlookers. One she loved, used her father's own knife, and one she hated, used a barbaric bone knife. They would decide the fate of the empire. She did not turn away even though she knew the outcome of this fight before it began.

As if summoned by her thought, the interloper struck true and his dagger came up, imbedding itself deep in the soft underside of her beloved's jaw. She glanced at her father, his face ashen in the knowledge that his empire would be turned over to the man who just murdered his would-be son-in-law.

"Majesty, your force is reduced by one. Shall we shed this sham and pretense? Shall we now discuss what must be? Your daughter wed to me and..."

She stopped listening then. Her minded raced. She was the only one left who could save the honor of her father's legacy. This was for more than king and country. This would be her last, and most important, duty. As this man's wife (but never his love) she had the chance to ensure that her father's work would not be lost to a victor's version of history.

Looking up, she saw the rage in her father's face. She had to stop this now. Mustering all of the regal elegance her blood afforded her, Princess Irulan, eldest daughter of the Padishah Emperor, Shaddam IV, stepped forward, touched her father's arm and spoke, "For this I was trained, Father."

His glance was sharp but, in that instant, he seemed to understand what his daughter was doing. On the surface, she was acquiescing but underneath, she was planning. She hoped he understood. From this moment forward, she was no longer his daughter but Paul Muad'Dib Atreides' loyal wife.

402 Minutes Left

...and I'm free. As free as anyone who is busy doing both OPs and Course staff work at the same time can be, anyway. So, I'm caught in a trap of my own work ethic.

Clearing out was surprisingly painless. After I twisted my knee again running the troops back to their weather-havens to grab their gear. These two days (Clean-up and Grad) are still always the worst days of the summer. Last night's Sergeants & Warrant's Mess binge-o-rama didn't help, everyone with rank on their slip-on is extra-waspish, snippy, and out-of-sorts today.

Like all grad parades I've ever been on up here, the rain from the long week of bad weather has cleared up and the parade square is a sun-baked anvil. People say that Camp RSMs have God on the speed-dial, and it's things like this never-varying development that lend credence to the rumour. With rehearsals going since 08h00, I'm dehydrating just watching the troops!

Eldritch RPG

  • Jul. 25th, 2008 at 4:23 PM
Hi.

There's this Eldritch Role-Playing system published by Goodman Games (I couldn't find the exact release date). I stumbled upon it while looking for D&D4e alternatives for the city TRPG event. So, anyway, personally I liked it much. When you overcome its flaws (which are mostly editorial), you get fast but detailed system that greatly suits story- and adventure-oriented fantasy games.

Looks like Goodman games planned a big future for it, but I can't help but notice that it's not exactly popular. Still, I don't have any statistics on that... I kinda root for it to live long and prosper, but it's always good to have a real picture.

Ok, so, please, can you answer these question, it would be very interesting for me:
Have you heard of Eldritch RPG? Have you tried it? Do you know anyone who plays it? What's your opinion on it (even if it's from just reading reviews)?

Thanks in advance.
Really, I feel like PR agent... Sorry. It's only plain curiosity and desire to share positive experience.

More Shadow Unit!

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 5:36 PM
Tonight--no, not yet, but eventually tonight--there will be another Shadow Unit over-hiatus DVD extra. (I did a word count on the over-hiatus DVD extras, by the way. 16,000 words, more or less. Another novella. Heh.)

This may be my favorite DVD extra ever. Hard to choose. But this may be it.

Edited to add: And hey--there it is!

Major League soccer all star game is going on downtown. I'm gonna have to get right by that. I'm sure that won't disrupt traffic at all but at least there's a really big rainbow up in the sky, so that makes things a little better. Oh well after game we shall slay evil and either discover mobility within ourselves or make lots of crappy jokes. ___ it's a mystery. Alright, take care”

Overheard in the corral

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 3:44 PM
I told this to [info]matociquala, who said I needed to post it.

Two horses live here at Endicott West. They don't belong to us; their owners rent the corral and storage space in the barn. So we have the pleasure of looking at them with none of the responsibilities. I call them the Scenic Horses.

Sometimes the owners of the Scenic Horses go out of town, and ask us to take care of the equines. Like a fond aunt, I get to tend them and give them back at the end of the week: a perfect arrangement.

The owners are on vacation, so Will and I have horse care duties. This involves feeding them their hay, cleaning the corral, refilling their water, spraying them with the (completely useless) fly spray, and, on Monday, pruning the branches of the mesquites and the cactus that are located where horses could hurt themselves on them.

I did all the feeding, watering, and cleaning. Then I pruned much mesquite...and realized I should have brought in the wheelbarrow to haul it out of the corral. The horses were much involved in eating, so I dashed off and fetched back the wheelbarrow.

The wheelbarrow that, um, usually arrives with hay in it.

Jester came to the gate looking hopeful. "You've already got it," I told him. "It's not my fault you eat the alfalfa first and only have grass hay left."

"Hay?" said Jester.

"No. And back up, because you're standing in front of the gate."

"Empty. No hay." He drooped and went back to his hay.

I trundled the barrow across the corral to halfway between the two piles of branches...and turned to find Jester sniffing at one pile of incredibly! thorny! dangerous! mesquite.

"No. You'll scatter it, get a thorn in your foot, and be lame, lame, lame."

"Eat this?"

"No." I loaded the pile in the wheelbarrow.

"In wheelbarrow! Not empty! Eat this!"

"What part of 'no?'"

"In wheelbarrow!"

I trundled over to the other pile. I was followed. I was tripping over an enormous horse.

"Eat this now?"

"No! It's the same stuff it was when it was ten feet further back! Go eat your hay!"

So he beats me to the other pile of mesquite branches, which are dry and dead and, if possible, even more thorny.

I now know it's possible to look disapproving and interested at the same time. "Not eat this. Toy?"

"What are you, a cat? Go eat your breakfast!"

I got the second pile loaded and headed for the gate. Where I had to wrestle with the wheelbarrow, the gate latch, and The Giant Hoofed Cat, who was determined to follow the wheelbarrow out the gate. Because "In wheelbarrow! Not done smelling!"

Coty continued to eat hay throughout this production. Humans = boring.

For those of you who are sometimes puzzled by my lexicon, I present the very foul, frankly offensive Wiki Guide to Canadian Military Slang

Of course we miss out on the really sweet (and by sweet I mean incredibly offensive) bits of British military slang. Like LBFMPBR.

Whisper of context:

Seriously, though, I wouldn't think my cell phone, which can't recognize a lot of words, would know Sinestro. Maybe I taught it to it somehow?

The Fire Drill was brief today. And getting back in was a little TOO painless. It should have taken a little longer than that.

And Cynra got me some stuff from SDCC. Now to play the waiting game.

most annoying

  • Jul. 24th, 2008 at 2:50 PM
we had a player in our group that could never ever make a choice without using a table and dice. if asked which way he wanted to go he would construct a table on a piece of paper, say 1-3 right 4-5 left 6-back the way I came. he would then roll his die to figure out what to do. funny thing is the tables were never evenly spread out. like in the above example it should have been 1-2 3-4 5-6. he seriously would not make a decision ever. even when he was faced with multiple enemies he had to make a table. it was perhaps the most annoying player quirk I ever put up with. which brings me to the question, what was(is) the most annoying player quirk in your group?
